Bloedel Reserve

150 acres on Bainbridge Island, including 66 acres of landscaped gardens and 84 acres of second-growth forest. Highlights include rhododendron glen, Japanese garden, moss garden, reflection pool. At 7571 Dolphin Drive on the north end of Bainbridge Island near the Agate Pass Bridge; follow signs from Highway 305, is located on the north end of the island. Elandan Gardens

Gardens built around Dan Robinson’s internationally known bonsai collection. The 5 acre waterfront site on Highway 16 just east of Gorst was once a log dump and landfill but has been transformed by Robinson and his wife, Diane, into a place of tranquility. The gift shop offers unusual items-antique furnishings, artwork, fine paper and stationery. Enter Elandan Gardens from the westbound lanes of the highway. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10am to 5pm. Whitney Gardens & Nursery

Located in Brinnon, on Highway 101 along Hood Canal. The gardens feature seven acres of rhododendrons, azaleas and related plants. Planting began in 1955, and many of the 3000 rhododendrons are now 35 to 45 years old. Height of bloom is end of April through mid-May, around Mother’s day. Daily hours are 10am to 5:30pm for the gardens ($1 charge for adults) and 10am to 5:30pm for the nursery. For information call (360) 796-4411.

The Washington Park Arboretum

It is located near the University of Washington at 2300 Arboretum Dr E in Seattle. Highlights include Azalea Way, Dogwood Glen, cherry trees and Japanese Garden. To get there form I-5 take Bellevue exit onto Highway 520 and then take the first exit to the right off 520. Follow the sings on Lake Washington Boulevard to the Arboretum. There is no charge for admission. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. Graham Visitors Center, in the northeast corner of the Arboretum on Arboretum Dr East, is open weekdays 10am to 4pm. Lakewold Gardens

10 acres of gardens on Gravelly Lake created by the Corydon Wagner family. Highlights include native plants; rare plants such as blue poppies; rock, rose, herb and shade gardens.
